Here are a few other bits from another concept… more on my site. www.ashthorp.com

Here are some higher res bits from one concept for the title design in Iron Man 3.  Here are the rest on my site, www.ashthorp.com

Here is a work in progress for a shot I have had in my mind of Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell.  Its a depiction of one of my favorite moments in the film.  I expanded upon it and took my own creative license with some of the consistencies but having fun with this one regardless.
To me these are my favorite times while I create.  While its loose, and filled with energy.  I enjoy the other stages but not nearly as much as this is almost when the art has a bit of innocence to it that reads and feels stronger then the final with out even trying.

Stay tuned!

I finally got around to finishing up this work in progress piece of tetsuo.  Just like the Kaneda piece… this one fought me just as hard.  I am trying to find the gap between realism but lack of to make up for style and not just attempt to draw how Otomo draws but my own way of seeing things and building things.  At the end I learned a ton from this piece and happy to have it “finished”.  On to the next battle!

CHEERS!

Here is a ROUGH color comp that I am playing with.  I am going to try and push some dramatic lighting but with a limited pallet. I like to do these quick 20 min color comps to figure out everything before I actually rebuild the file from the ground up. Aiming to get mood, lighting, values and using only about 6-7 colors in the final. Wish me luck! I like to show this rough crap to establish how much time and work it takes for me to figure things out as the piece grows. It probably looks like shit all the way until the last 3 min or so… then I hate it a few hours later haha. Its good to feel frustration and be humbled by how much there is to be learned…

Here is another homage to one of my favorite films Akira.  This time its the character Kaneda.  This piece was a total pain in the ass the whole time I worked on it.  I find it incredibly difficult to hold that line between fan art and creating my own vision.  I am such a big fan of Otomo’s work that I don’t want to just replicate his style but bring my own sense of things but not push to far away from the world it was created.  Sound fussy? It really is.  Another challenge I had was creating the likeness and attitude that he brings to the comic.  He has a certain demeanor that is very strong but can be hard to capture unless you find those subtle cues and accent them.

Anyways.  It was a total challenge with this one but I am happy I stuck with it and figured it out.  To me my work is never finished but I just decided that its time is up and move along to the next challenge.

Until next time…

GOD CONCEPTS FOR STYLE FRAMES :

Here are some god concepts for a spot my friend Anthony Scott Burns directed with the Team at Tendril.

These where some quick early ideas I did that later evolved into another direction into what you see in the final spot.  I had a blast making these and is always fun to draw creepy odd things.

Big thanks to everyone for having me on board.

Here is the final post:

GABE : LAST MAN STANDING

Here is a process spot on a piece I did for my friend Danny Luvisi’s book Last Man Standing.  I had WAY to much fun with this one.  It was a bit of a struggle to get the colors the way I wanted and keep the energy of the line art but I am somewhat happy with the outcome.  I am looking forward to seeing this in the book amongst all the other amazing work and creations.  Keep your eye out for the re-release of his book!

Messing around a bit the other night.  Having fun sketching is the key with this kind of stuff :)

Here are some sketches and a recent attempt at zbrush and a rescue by my go to program, photoshop.  Really enjoying this new stage in my creative process.  3D is very daunting and monotonous at first but extremely rewarding once you over come bits of the learning process…
